Leslie Paul Blobaum, 66, passed away from this
life, Monday, August 17, 2009 at the Ashland Care Center in Ashland
after battling cancer. Les was born June 17, 1943, in Fairbury,
Nebraska to Werner and Irene Blobaum. He grew up on the farm north of
Fairbury and graduated from Fairbury High School in 1960 and the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1965 with a degree in Business
Administration. On April 17th, 1965, Les married his high school
sweetheart, Carolyn Weerts. He then began active duty as a Marine and
served in Viet Nam. After returning to the states, together they
raised two daughters, Natalie and Nicole.
During Les’s life, he always put faith, family and friends first and
was dedicated to community service. The Ashland Chamber of Commerce,
Ashland Rotary, American Lutheran Church, Red Cross Blood Drive,
Liquid Propane Gas Association Board, VFW Post #9776, Ashland Library
Board, Ashland Country Club, and the American Legion Post #129 are
among the many community groups in which Les held leadership roles.
Les was always very conscientious about the importance of education
and initiated the Rotary’s Academic Honor Program with the Ashland
Greenwood High School. Along with his many interests, golf, bridge,
bowling, Husker football, and chocolate helped fill his life with joy.
Les spent his days making sure his customers were warm in the winter
as he owned and operated Great Plains Propane Service for 36 years. On
most mornings you could find Les drinking coffee with friends and
business associates and they discussed the topics of each day.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Byron Blobaum. Les
is survived by his lovely wife Carolyn, along with their beautiful
children Natalie Sell and husband Terry of Waukee, IA and Nicole
Chudomelka and husband Dan of Ashland. Les enjoyed many hours spending
precious time with his grandchildren Leslie and Bryce Chudomelka and
Justin and Jenna Sell. He is also survived by sisters Judy Lynch of
Omaha and Nancy Ludwig of Harlan, IA along with many nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends.
Pallbearers for the service are Jay Lynch, Greg Hohl, Monty
Zantow, Chris Ludwig, Jeff Weerts and Jim Drake. Honorary Pallbearers
are Bill Koch, Scott Parde, Eric Brown, Mike Dillon and Brett Lambert.
