Howard was born to Dell and Hertha (Jessen) Schofield. Howard's mother died when he was just two years old and he was raised by his father. He spent most of his childhood years in the Gretna, NE area where he also went to school. At the age of seventeen he enlisted in the US Navy. Howard proudly served on the USS Boise until his discharge in 1946. He received the Purple Heart for his service. At that time he returned to Nebraska and met the love of his life, Colleen Stewart. They were united in marriage on January 26, 1947 at Cedar Hill Church and that very same day moved on the Negley farm north of Ashland. It was there Howard raised cattle and farmed for many years. Howard and Cozy had two sons, David and Gerry. Howard was very proud of his family, his farm and his Naval career. He loved attending Navy reunions, spending time with his family, and telling stories. Howard and Cozy stayed on the farm until 2002 when they retired to a home in Ashland.

Howard's wife of 61 years, Cozy, passed away in April of 2008 and he missed her dearly. Howard died at the Tabitha Home in Lincoln on March 7, 2009 at the age of 84 years. He had been a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church and a founding member of the Ashland-Greenwood Booster Club. He also served on various boards during his lifetime.

Howard is survived by his son Gerry and his wife Patti Schofield of Ashland, his daughter in law Tina Schofield of Omaha, his 12 grandchildren, 8 and soon to be 9 great grandchildren and his sister Ruby Bishop of Gretna, NE.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents Dell and Hertha Schofield, son David Schofield and grandson David Schofield, Jr.
