James was born to Robert and Ruth (Newsham)
Steffen. He attended school in Ashland and graduated from Ashland High
School in 1977. After working various jobs for a few years, he joined
the US Army in 1981. He served on bases around the world during his 23
years of active duty. During the last 10 years, he served in the Army
attached to the National Guard. After his service in the Army, he
lived in Omaha for 4 years and during the last 4 years has made his
home in Yutan. He kept busy by helping area farmers during the harvest
season and doing other jobs. Jim passed away April 1, 2009 at Lakeside
Hospital in Omaha at the age of 49 years. Jim was currently holding
the office of commander of the Yutan VFW Post # 9844 and he was a
member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Yutan.
Jim is survived by his daughters Nikki and her husband Nic Riecken and
Lisa Steffen, grandsons Noah and Tyson Riecken, all of Gretna, NE,
mother Ruth Parks of Ashland, sister and brother in law Renee and Jim
Kucera of Ashland, and brothers Paul Steffen of Ashland and Brett and
his wife Carla Steffen of Texas.
Jim was preceded in death by his father Robert Steffen.
