Helen K. Greene, who recently moved into Oxbow
Living Center in Ashland, died Friday, February 12 from
complications of pneumonia. Helen was born in Lincoln on November 22,
1923, to Hazel and Theodore Kiesselbach. She attended the University
of Nebraska until WWII interrupted her education in 1943, and she
moved to San Francisco to work for the Office of War Information. She
received her college degree 42 years later, graduating from UNL in
1985 in Great Plains Studies. In 1945, when her college sweetheart,
William (Hank) Greene, returned from the front lines in France, they
married. Helen then worked as a reporter for the Lincoln Journal
newspaper before retiring to raise six children. Helen became a
political activist for the Democratic Party and was Nebraska publicity
chairman for John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign. She was
appointed State Safety Director by Gov. Frank B. Morrison, and later
was elected to the Nebraska State Board of Education where she served
for 12 years. She was president, vice president, and secretary of the
Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools Foundation, and was a
founder and president of the Ashland Arts Council for 13 years. In
2003 Helen was named Queen of the Ashland Stir-Up.
Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband Hank, and by her
three siblings, Max, Theodore, and Katherine. She is survived by six
children: Molly Lairamore of Las Vegas, Susan Dale of Ashland, Sarah
Greene of Brooklyn, Chris Greene of Boulder, Julie Greene of Silver
Spring, Maryland, and Alex Greene of Memphis; in addition to her
“adopted” daughter Donna Stevens of Manchester, Missouri, and ten
grandchildren, Ben, Danny, Walker, Kevan, Fritz, Amanda, Dylan,
Sophie, Henry, and Hattie.
