Roy B. Hay was born on May 5, 1934 in Huntington, West Virginia to Ruben and
Marguerite (Bonnington) Hay. He grew up and attended schools in Huntington.
He graduated from Marshall University in West Virginia with a bachelors
degree in chemistry. Roy worked for Allied Chemical Company in Huntington
for several years. In 1964 he moved to Bellevue, NE where he also worked for
Allied Chemical for a short time. While working, he obtained a bachelors
degree in elementary education from the University of Omaha. Soon after, he
began teaching at the Westside Community School District in Omaha. He
retired from teaching in 1994. Roy was married to Kathy Gleason on February 24,
1979. They made their home at Beacon View for 17 years before moving to
Ashland in 1994. Roy passed away on September 8, 2010 at Bergan Mercy
Hospital in Omaha at the age of 76 years. Roy was an artist, an avid hunter and
fisherman and had been a fishing guide at Leech Lake in Minnesota. He also
enjoyed archery, watching the Nebraska Cornhusker football games and almost
all sports, and watching NASCAR racing. He loved acquiring many unusual old
cars which he refurbished and resold throughout the years.
Roy is survived by his wife Kathy; his daughters, Katie Hay and her husband
Todd Shevelson of Chicago, Illinois, and Ritee Gerber of Holualoa, Hawaii;
his grandchildren Heather Sams, Zach Hagen, Kristi Billington and Katie
Hagen; his 12 great grandchildren; and his only uncle, Douglas Bonnington of
Clearwater, Florida.
