In her early years she worked as a nurses aide at the hospital in Holton and also worked for her future husband’s aunt in her restaurant. She worked in a dress factory in Holton until John left for the service. She moved to Topeka, Kansas for a short time until joining John in Missisippi where he was stationed. After two years he was transferred to Lincoln, Nebraska where they lived from 1955-1961. She worked at the Western Electric Plant in Lincoln and also Russell Stover Chocolates. They moved to Omaha in 1961 when both John and Velma began working at the new Western Electric Plant. She worked there until 1975 when she retired to take care of the kids. They moved to Ashland in 1967 and stayed until 1988. They lived in Missouri for 17 and one half years near Table Rock Lake. They moved back to Ashland in 2004.
