Arthur J. Riedesel of Lincoln, NE, formerly of Ashland, NE, publisher of The Ashland Gazette from 1955 to January, 1986, died Febr. 23, 2010 in Lincoln.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth, Lincoln, NE; three children and spouses, Paul and Joyce Riedesel, Minneapolis, MN, Gordon and Patricia Riedesel, Pembroke, NH, Anita and Ron LaScala, Tampa, FL; grandson Gregory and wife Amy Riedesel, Bellingham, WA; granddaughter Heather Riedesel Keen, Minneapolis, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother Eugene Riedesel.

In Ashland, Arthur was a member of the United Methodist Church since 1955. He served 17 years as secretary of Pomegranate Lodge No. 110 of Masons.  Arthur was a member of Ashland American Legion Post #129 and a life member of V.F.W. Post #9776, Ashland. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1968 and was Stir-Up King in 1991. Arthur served on the board of Nebraska Press Association for 10 years and was its president 1979-80, and also had served the Nebraska Press Advertising Service for 12 years and was its president. He was the 1973 Centennial chairman of the Press Association and wrote its history. Arthur had served as president of the Loup City and Ashland Rotary Clubs.

He was born to Arthur L. and Marie Lawrence Riedesel at Brule, NE on Oct. 6, 1921. The family moved to Ogallala in 1934 and Riedesel graduated from Ogallala high school in 1938. He started in the newspaper business as an unpaid printer's devil as early as 1934 and became a very junior employee of the Keith County News at Ogallala in 1938-39. Arthur attended Nebraska Wesleyan University 1939-41; University of Colorado, summer term of 1942; and then served 40 months in the Army during WWII. Thirty months of that were with the 115th Station Hospital in England, France and Germany. He returned to school at Columbia, MO in the summer of 1946. On September 3, 1946, he married Ruth Creamer at Ogallala and they lived at Columbia until the end of summer of 1947 when he took two degrees at Missouri. Arthur was co-publisher of The Sherman County Times in Loup City, 1947-1953; publisher of The York Republican 1954-55; and became Ashland Gazette publisher Oct. 1, 1955. Mr. Riedesel, a Methodist, served as church organist in each of the three towns he had newspapers.
