Frieda W. Schrum was born July 22, 1916 on a farm
in Butler County, Nebraska, one of six children, to parents Frederick
and Dina (Kopke) Abrahams. She attended District 49 school and the
Rising City Lutheran schools until she completed eighth grade. She
worked in the David City, NE area for many years providing domestic
assistance. During WWII she moved to the San Francisco, CA area with
her sisters where she worked at a factory for two years making life
jackets for service personnel. Frieda returned to Nebraska and helped
on her family farm in Butler County and again did domestic work in
David City. She married George Schrum on February 9, 1949 in her
mothers home in Butler County. George and Frieda made their home in
Ashland where she lived until June of 2003. During this time she
raised two children, Frederick and Ida. Frieda was a caretaker for
several family members including her mother, Dina, aunt, Pauline,
sister, Mathilda, brother, Paul and husband George when they were
faced with illness. She became a resident of the Ashland Care Center
in June of 2003 after experiencing health problems and was a resident
there until her death on Febr. 28, 2010. Frieda had been a member of
the American Lutheran Church in Ashland.
Frieda is survived by her son Frederick Schrum, Lincoln, NE, daughter
and son in law, Ida and Gari Kent, Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Richard (Errin)
Kent, Olathe, KS, Scott Schrum, Lincoln, NE, Crystal (Eric) Larson,
Omaha; great grandchildren, Alexander and Madeline; sister Josephine
Pauly, Eugene, OR; brother in law Carl and his wife Leota Schrum,
Omaha; niece; nephews; and cousins. She was preceded in death by
husband George F. Schrum, parents, sisters Mathilda and Gerdina, and
brothers Paul and Herbert.
