Lloyd was born to Harold J. and Persus
L. (Hendrix) Townsend and graduated from Grand Island High
School in 1941. He entered the US Army in December of 1942 and went to
England in December of 1943. His unit fought through France, Belgium
and Germany including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a radio operator
in the Army Signal Corp. After his discharge from the army in
September of 1945, he returned to Grand Island and worked in the
laundry business with his father at the Model Laundry. On July 25,
1946, Lloyd married Aldean R. Spiehs at St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Grand Island. After his fathers death in 1957, he continued to operate
the Model Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company and eventually purchased it
with his uncle Ralph Townsend. They operated the laundry until a fire
destroyed it in December, 1972. After that he worked for the Kelly
Supply Company in Grand Island and in retirement worked at Skagway
Department Stores in the sporting goods and automotive areas. After
his
retirement in 1987, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and taking care
of his home and yard. In 2003, Lloyd and Aldean moved to Wahoo to be
closer to their family.
