Ted was born
on a farm between Wahoo and Colon, NE on March 20, 1921 to Karel and
Anna Mach Divis. He was the fifth child in a family of eleven. Ted
attended School District 53 in grades 1–3, and 5–9. He also attended
St. John School in Prague in grade 4; School District 70 in grade 9;
Colon grade school in grade 10 and he graduated from Wahoo High School
in 1938. During his high school days, he sang in chorus and competed
in state competition in music in Lincoln and Grand Island. From 1939
to 1940, Ted worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Blair, NE
and later worked for the Ole Anderson Auto Company in Wahoo.
In 1942 he worked at the Mead Ordinance Plant for six months. In
October of 1942, he joined the Army Air Force Ground Crew and received
his training in Tucson, AZ. He served eight months in the United
States and then thirty months overseas in the Hawaiian Islands, Canton
Island, Macon Island, Gilbert Islands, Enewetak Islands and ended up
in Iwo Jima after it was captured. After getting out of the army in
November, 1945, he took up farming and worked again at the Mead
Ordinance Plant where fertilizer was made instead of bombs. In 1948,
Ted began farming when he rented 200 acres of farm land. Healso raised
cattle.
On October 13, 1952, Ted was united in marriage to Rose Hanus of David
City at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Two daughters were born to this
union, Carol and Connie. Ted was a member of the American Legion Post
#82 and the VFW Post #4502 and served on the honor guard for many
years. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Wahoo Council #1833. Ted
was a member of the St. Wenceslaus Senior Choir from 1936 to 2009 and
served as an acolyte for the church for many years. He belonged to the
Saunders County Czech Singers for several years and participated in
Christmas on the Prairie at the Saunders County Museum. Ted and his
wife Rose moved to Wahoo December 11, 1999 after retiring from
farming.
He is survived by wife Rose, daughters Carol Divis, Wahoo, Connie and
husband Steve Tippery, Omaha, grandson Adam John "AJ" Tippery, Omaha,
sisters and brother in law, Anastasia and Joe Sousek, Prague, NE, Sr.
Ann Divis MS, Waverly, NE, brothers and sister in law, Charles Divis,
Wahoo, Ernest and Rita Divis, El Paso, TX, sisters in law Rita M.
Divis and Ann Divis, Wahoo, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and
nephews. Preceded in death by parents, Karel and Anna (Mach) Divis,
brothers Frances and Anthony Divis, sisters Jenny Simodynes, Josephine
Divis, Sr. Camilla Divis ND, Julia Connelly, brothers in law, Vincent
Simodynes, Gene Connelly, sisters in law, Shirley Divis and Dorothy
Divis.
