Mary "Polly" was born to Charles and Effie (Morgan) Gates.  She attended public school in Waterloo and graduated from Waterloo High School. Polly was awarded a scholarship to Peru State College, but could not attend because her parents needed her at home. Polly worked for the Robinson family in Waterloo for a short time, doing house work, sewing and other chores. She attended the Van Sant Business School in Omaha. She held several office jobs and worked at the Service Life Building as an elevator operator.

Polly met James Shepherd in 1947 and one month later, on June 22, 1947, they were married at the Lutheran Church in Auburn, NE. They lived in Omaha, Waterloo and the Two Rivers area until moving to Ithaca in 1954. When her children were a little older, she became the Ithaca Postmaster in 1968. Her husband of 57 years, James, died in 2004. In 2005 Polly moved to Westgate Assisted Living in Omaha. With her health failing, she moved to South Haven Living Center in Wahoo in December of 2007.

She had been a member of the Ithaca United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, and a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post #4502 in Wahoo.

Polly was preceded in death by husband James, brothers Jack, Robert and Charles Keith Gates.
