Edward J. Cech, age 79, was a resident of Wahoo, Nebraska. He died May 19,
2010 at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln, NE. Edward was
born in rural Colon, NE on September 21, 1930 to Edward L. and Theresa (Janda)
Cech. Edward graduated from Wahoo High School in 1947. He went on to
Notre Dame University in South Bend, IN, graduating in 1951. He served in
the US Air Force from 1951 to 1955. Ed attended Language School at Syracuse
University and served as a translator in Lybia and Germany. While studying
in Mexico City, he contracted polio. That didn't stop him from continuing in
his studies. Ed obtained a masters degree in Slavic Languages at Indiana
University. He taught at Syracuse University in 1958 and 1959. He received a
fellowship from a combined program at Indiana University and Columbia
University. From 1961 to 1967 he taught Russian at Notre Dame. In 1968 he
taught Russian and Spanish at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Later
in 1968, he moved to Japan where he taught English until 1970. Ed came back
to Notre Dame for several years. His last position was as a language
instructor at the University of Selesia in Poland in 1976 and 1977.
Ed was preceded in death by parents and brother Bernie Cech. He is survived
by nephews and spouses, David and Rachel Cech, Denver, CO, Tony and Ann Cech,
and Matt Cech, all of Lincoln, NE; great nieces, Caroline and Olivia Cech,
Denver, CO; sister in law Sharon Cech, Lincoln, NE.
