Gladys L. Eckley-Johnson, age 79, of
Mead, NE died June 23, 2010 at home. Gladys was born January 24, 1931
in Chadron, NE to Robert and Emma (Lambrecht) Smith. When she was
three months into kindergarten in Chadron, her father was transferred
to Long Pine, NE where Gladys attended school through the eighth
grade. Her father was transferred back to Chadron and she finished
high school there, graduating in 1948. Gladys was married to Gerald
Eckley on June 14, 1948 in Winner, South Dakota. They lived briefly in
Idaho and then lived in several places in northwest Nebraska. Gladys
and Gerald moved to Wahoo in 1955 for one year before moving to the
Mead area. She worked as a waitress at Fairview Café for one year.
Following that, she was a bookkeeper at Anderson Auto Company in Wahoo
for several years until she became the bookkeeper for her husbands
business, Eckley Trucking Company. They retired from the business in
1982. Gerald passed away in 1988. Gladys married Milton Johnson in
1993 and they continued to live in Mead. Milton passed away in 1998.
Gladys had spent the winters in Arizona for many years. She was a
member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2971 of Wahoo.
Gladys is survived by her daughter and
son in law Chrysta and Monty Walker, Cedar Lake, IN; daughter in law
Connie Eckley, Mead; grandchildren and spouses Jay and Kristi Eckley,
Mead, Cori Eckley, Yutan, NE, Andrea and Bill Nickrent, St. Louis, MO,
Adam Walker, Valparaiso, IN; four great grandchildren; sister Hazel
(Bill) Thomas, Fremont, NE; brother Milford (Betty) Smith, Odell, NE;
many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husbands Gerald Eckley
and Milton Johnson; son James Eckley; sisters Elsie Amick and Mary
McKenzie.
Funeral service Saturday, June 26, 2010,
11:00 am at Svoboda Funeral Home; interment Morningside Cemetery,
Mead; visitation Friday, 3 - 8:00 pm and one hour before service
Saturday, at the funeral home. Rev. Charles Townsend will be
officiating the service. Casket bearers are Jay Eckley, Adam
Walker, Bill Nickrent, Roger Thomas, Doug Thomas and Bill McKenzie.
