Valerie Jo O'Brien was born December 14, 1941 in Lexington, NE to Herbert and Madeline (Kimberly) Large. She graduated from Lexington High School in 1960 and attended Kearney State University. Her career included employment at Security Mutual Insurance Company, Southeast Psychiatric Clinic in Lincoln, Wahoo High School, McGill and Martin Dental Office and Christensen Drug. In 1962 she married Terrence A. O'Brien of Randolph, NE and they resided in Lincoln until moving to Wahoo in 1971. Val battled ovarian cancer for two and a half years and she was a child polio survivor. Val was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Saunders County Hospital Auxiliary and the Women's Bridge Club. Valerie loved playing handheld electronic games such as tetris and solitaire, doing crossword puzzles, reading books and playing bridge. She also loved being at their lake in Minnesota, where she enjoyed relaxing on the deck drinking coffee and watching the sunrise.

Val is survived by her husband, son and daughter in law Cory and Diane O'Brien, Wahoo; daughter Marnie O'Brien, Lincoln; granddaughter Katelyn O'Brien, Wahoo; sisters Sharon "Sue" Pritzker, Ormand Beach, FL, Colleen Bowers, DeKalb, IL, Holly and husband Gene Comer, Newton, IA; brother in law Dan and wife Bonnie O'Brien, Hayden Lake, ID; sister in law Edie O'Brien, Orange Park, FL; nieces, nephews and granddogs.
